A Journey Towards Food Security

In the vast expanses of Africa's fertile lands lies a paradox – while the continent boasts immense agricultural potential, decades of exploitation and neglect have left millions trapped in the grip of poverty and food insecurity. At Bumuntu, we refuse to accept this status quo. Instead, we are committed to igniting a transformational journey towards food security through our Food Security/Agribusiness Due Diligence initiative.

The statistics are stark, underscoring the urgent need for action. But amidst these challenges, we see opportunity – an opportunity to empower African farmers, unlock the potential of the land, and build a future where no one goes to bed hungry.

Central to our approach is the establishment of the Bumuntu Due Diligence Network (BDDN) – a coalition of trade union partners, farmers' associations, and excavation associations united in their quest for responsible resource management and equitable distribution of benefits. Together, we advocate for policies that prioritize the needs of local communities, ensuring that the wealth generated from Africa's natural resources is shared equitably among its people.

But our work extends beyond advocacy – it is about building capacity, fostering collaboration, and driving tangible change on the ground. In the face of global challenges such as the food price inflation triggered by the Ukrainian crisis, we recognize the importance of leveraging existing frameworks such as the EU sustainability and due diligence regulations. However, we also understand that enforcement cannot rely solely on regulatory bodies or NGOs operating in isolation.

That's why we adopt a multidisciplinary approach, bringing together stakeholders from across sectors and empowering them with the knowledge and tools necessary to ensure compliance and drive sustainable change. By building a robust network of partners and stakeholders, we create a collective force for good that transcends borders and boundaries.

Our efforts are aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 2: Zero Hunger, reflecting our unwavering commitment to addressing food insecurity and promoting sustainable agriculture practices in Africa. But more than just numbers on a page, our work is about people – the farmers who toil the land, the families who rely on their harvests, and the communities whose futures hang in the balance.
