Gabon’s Move Toward Digital Education
Our world is more and more ruled by new technological innovations, pushing countries to rethink their way of operating to stay on track with the world. The rapid development of technology sectors is ongoing across a lot of different fields, leading to inequalities. Education is an important field in which the use of new technologies plays a crucial role, creating huge disparities between countries that have understood the need to invest in educational technology and those who are just starting to realize this. Indeed education is key, as it is one of the most important factors in the development of countries, which today requires the integration of new technologies.
Gabon understands the importance of investing in new technologies for the educational field, to ensure the future development of the country. It decided to introduce a new digital education project in the cities of Libreville and Oyem by the end of November 2025. The aim of this project is to address the different challenges that Gabon faces in the educational field, such as teacher shortages and the lack of connectivity between schools. To succeed in the project, Gabon acknowledges that success depends on collaboration. Then, it collaborates with Huawei and Moov Africa Gabon Télécom, to increase internet connectivity and equip students.
Firstly, the collaboration with moov Africa Gabon Télecom is crucial, as according to ITU data, 77% of Gabon’s population did not use the internet in 2023. Therefore, a stable internet connection is essential to succeed in the project. The collaboration with Huawei will help build a real digital education system throughout the country, as they aim to overcome the challenges that are slowing digital education, as Mehedi Hasan Limon, Vice President of Huawei MECA Public Sector, states : “With our solutions already deployed in 2,800+ universities and 500,000 schools worldwide, we’re committed to making digital education more accessible, connected, and future-ready”. By associating with the national stakeholders and international enterprises with significant experience in digital education, Gabon will be able to strengthen the implementation of new technologies in its educational
sector.
The launch of this new project shows Gabon’s commitment to building a modern, inclusive, technological education ecosystem capable of supporting national development and preparing the country for the next digital world economy. This initiative should be an example for other African countries that have not yet invested in digital educational technologies. Indeed, pushing technology in the education sector can be a solution to address various challenges which are slowing the educational sector, linked to a lack of professors, educational resources.
Today, a large part of knowledge can be accessible through virtual libraries or courses. We hope that through collaborations, e-learning will continue to develop in Africa, allowing students to acquire important knowledge directly in their country. This knowledge will not be lost, and will enable African countries to increase their attractiveness and their level of development. Finally, encouraging this type of initiative is crucial, to allow diverse African countries to step up and reduce the gap in the educational, economic and development
fields.
