Kung fu is becoming increasingly popular among young people in Africa. More specifically, we can observe the growing popularity of this sport in countries such as Kenya, Rwanda, Ethiopia, where kung fu clubs are emerging rapidly. As of 2021, there were 31 Kung Fu clubs across Rwanda affiliated with the Rwanda Wushu Federation. The popularity of Kung Fu , and sports in general among young people is an essential factor helping them develop academically and remain open to the world.
According to Kung fu’s teachers and students at various clubs across Africa, the practice of this sport offers them numerous benefits. Thanks to Kung Fu, some students have reported improvements in concentration, discipline and memory. Indeed, through its physical movements, structured rules this sport helps students acquire qualities that are beneficial in academic settings. Aisha-Faith, a 17 years old Kung Fu student in Kennedy Murimi’s Kung Fu classes, affirmed : “I used to be a slow learner, but ever since I began practicing Kung Fu, I’ve become sharper and faster, which has significantly improved my academic performance”.
Furthermore, improved academic performance is not the only benefit students gain from these Kung Fu classes. In areas where young people are exposed to alcohol, drugs and criminal activity, the discipline and self control learned in Kung Fu classes have enabled many of them to avoid or overcome these negative influences, which are often prevalent in low-income neighborhoods (e.g. : Kawangware, Kenya).
The practice of this Chinese martial art also provides a meaningful opportunity for cultural exchange. For many African students, participating in a traditional academic exchange program is difficult. However, through Kung Fu and the support of both the Chinese government and several African governments (such as Côte d’Ivoire, Kenya, Rwanda), students can experience a culture different from their own : Chinese culture. For instance, Rwanda has hosted Chinese Kung Fu teachers to train local youth. Additionally, the Confucius Institute of the university of Rwanda and the Chinese Embassy in Rwanda have organized several Kung Fu competitions to promote cultural exchange and provide young people with a broader worldview.
In conclusion, the practice of Kung Fu and sport in general is a valuable tool that helps students to stay physically healthy, thereby enabling them to attend school regularly. Moreover, it provides them with knowledge about a foreign culture, and important values that will benefit them throughout their academic and personal life.
